Make Your Own Snack Seasonings For Popcorn And More

Posted on: 7 October 2022

Have you ever been eating a snack that was good, but could have used a little more flavor? Popcorn makes a lot of people feel this way. Sometimes small pretzels and cheese crackers do too. If you have some premade snack seasonings on hand, you can always use them to flavor your snacks and snack mixes. Buying premade snack seasonings is always an option, but you could also make your own. Here are a couple of recipes for easy, DIY snack seasonings.

Dill Pickle Seasoning

This seasoning gets its name from the fact that it tastes like dill pickles. It's awesome when sprinkled on popcorn and pretzels, but you can also mix a tablespoon of the seasoning into a cup of sour cream to make a tasty dill pickle dip, which is good with veggies.

To make the seasoning, you need:

  • 1/4 cup vinegar powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried dill
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon finely ground salt

Combine the ingredients in a bowl, and stir them well to combine. Transfer the mixture to a jar, and keep it closed between uses. It should last several months in a cool, dry place.

3-Pepper Seasoning

If you enjoy things on the spicy side, then this seasoning mix is for you. The three peppers each have their own character, so they blend together for a balanced heat. Be prepared, as this recipe does require a mortar and pestle to pulverize the pepper flakes.

You'll need:

  • 2 tablespoons red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons dried jalapeno pepper
  • 2 tablespoons dried ancho chili peppers
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • a pinch of white sugar

Combine all of the ingredients in a mortar and pestle. Grind until fine and uniform. Transfer to a jar for storage, and enjoy.

Sweet and Salty Seasoning

If you can't decide whether you want something sweet or something salty, reach for your favorite snack and sprinkle some of this homemade snack seasoning on top.

You'll need:

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • a pinch of dried thyme
  • a pinch of dried mustard

Mix all of the ingredients together. Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place.

Hopefully, these snack seasoning recipes serve you well. Once you get used to having snack seasonings on hand, you'll start wondering how you ever snacked without them. Enjoy!
